who me? this old blog?
Lou Goldford. Active musician + composer from St. Louis, recently relocated to Asia. In limbo between undergrad/grad schools. Seeking to expand an understanding of arts-cultural phenomena in day-to-day adventures. For a more complete bio and credits, you can go here.
I started this blog for 2 reasons. For starters, my dear friend moved as far west as he could, and I’m counting on our blogs to communicate with each other as our friends begin spreading out all over. There was also this conversation I started at his going away party. Sometimes I make asinine comments. Like the one about comedy always moving in a progressive direction, constantly growing into a better version of itself. I think I was referring to standup comedians of today, and especially Borat, who represents a very complex form of “mirror parody” – his material is the reaction of his subjects in the same shot, the same people he makes fun of by acting like them or by tricking them through interview questions to expose their faults and prejudices.
Fortunately, my friends were there to knock me off the soapbox. There have always been complex higher structures in comedy; apparently I failed to site the performances of certain African tribes in New Orleans who perform a very kickass parody of themselves – they do their own stereotyped image given to them by the regional white folks! And how awesome is that?!
So, there’s a need for a forum to discuss crazy theories anyway, let alone my crazy theories that need correcting. Or encouragement on the rare instance of a good theory. Will you make a small donation to my fund?
